WTA recap: Qinwen Zheng posts upset at Palermo Ladies Open

China’s Qinwen Zheng upset second-seeded Russian Ludmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 32 at the Palermo Ladies Open on Monday at Palermo, Italy. Zheng saved nine of 10 break-point chances while converting four of seven break-point opportunities against Samsonova.

Two other seeded players, Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann and France’s Oceane Dodin won to move into the Round of 16.

No. 3 seed Teichmann defeated Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a match that lasted two hours, four minutes, while the sixth-seeded Dodin took just 78 minutes to tackle Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 6-3, 6-2.

BNP Paribas Poland Open

Solvakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova took down No. 5 seed Anna Blinkova of Russia 6-3, 6-3 on Monday at Gdynia, Poland, converting five of her 12 break-point opportunities and winning a point on 26 of her 35 successful first serves.

Schmiedlova also won 15 points off Blinkova’s first serve; Blinkova won only nine points off the first serve of Schmiedlova.

Romania’s Irina Bara, the 10th seed, needed two hours and 38 minutes to turn back Italy’s Federica Di Sarra 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova, Hungary’s Anna Bondar, Poland’s Weronika Falkowska and Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova posted straight-set victories.
