Four Houston Astros made this year’s All-Star Game, but none of them will play in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic at Coors Field in Denver.
Houston shortstop Carlos Correa, who was placed in MLB’s health and safety protocols on Friday, will be replaced by Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, who was added to the American League All-Star roster on Saturday.
Astros second baseman Jose Altuve will skip the game to reportedly rest a leg injury while teammate and outfielder Michael Brantley will use the All-Star break to recover from right side soreness. In addition, Houston reliever Ryan Pressly will be away on paternity leave for the birth of his first child.
Sticking with the American League, Oakland Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt, Kansas City Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield and Tampa Bay shortstop Joey Wendle have been added to the roster as replacements.
In the National League, San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado was named as a replacement for Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who tore his ACL during Saturday night’s game. The Padres made the announcement on the videoboard ahead of Machado’s at-bat in the fourth inning. It’ll be his fifth trip to the Midsummer Classic.
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler has been added to the roster as a replacement and will join teammates Chris Taylor, Max Muncy and Justin Turner at the Midsummer Classic.
Meanwhile, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts will not participate in Tuesday’s game due to an undisclosed injury. Neither will Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom, who – according to MLB – is officially out.
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who will be making his 10th All-Star Game appearance, Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer, who will be making his eighth, Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta and New York Mets starter Taijuan Walker are the other replacements in the National League.
It’s the first appearance for Walker, Wendle and Peralta, bringing the total of first-timers to 39 — which ties the record set in the 2013 All-Star Game.
Molina is replacing injured San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.
