The Toronto Blue Jays placed third baseman Cavan Biggio on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to a neck injury.

The Blue Jays said the 26-year-old Biggio was diagnosed with a cervical ligament sprain.

Biggio is batting .205 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 39 games during his third season with Toronto.

“It’s real nagging,” Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said of Biggio’s injury prior to Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. “He gets loose and then he’s fine but then the more he plays it gets too uncomfortable. The best thing for him is just take the 10 days so we can get rid of that pain and be ready to come back after 10 days.”

The Blue Jays also activated infielder Joe Panik off the injured list as part of six total moves made prior to the contest at Dunedin, Fla.

Panik last played on May 5 due to a left calf strain. He is batting .226 with four RBIs in 19 games.

The 30-year-old Panik is in his second season with the Blue Jays. He spent the bulk of his eight-year career with the San Francisco Giants and was a National League All-Star in 2015.

Toronto also activated right-hander Anthony Castro (forearm) off the 10-day injured list, recalled right-hander Ty Tice from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned left-hander Anthony Kay and right-hander Jeremy Beasley to Buffalo.

Castro, 26, pitched 7 1/3 innings of three-hit scoreless ball in six appearances for Toronto earlier this season.

Tice, 24, has a 5.14 ERA in four 2021 appearances for the Blue Jays. The 26-year-old Kay is 0-2 with a 6.62 ERA in five appearances (four starts), while Beasley, 25, is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in four appearances.
