Robbie Ray had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning and ended up tossing seven shutout innings as the visiting Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in St. Petersburg.
The Rays had won six consecutive games coming in and were going for the series sweep against a Toronto team which had lost four of five.
Ray (7-4) pitched 6 1/3 hitless innings and had retired 17 consecutive batters before Yandy Diaz hit one to the top of the fence in left for a double.
Diaz thought he hit it out, but a fan in left field attempted to catch the ball and video replay showed the ball would not have cleared the wall.
The fan was escorted out of the game one batter later.
Ray, who walked Diaz with two outs in the first, was exceptional and came into the seventh holding a 3-0 lead.
Although Diaz (2-for-3) broke up the no-hitter, he was caught in a rundown on a grounder hit by Austin Meadows. Ray got out of the seventh one batter later by getting Randy Arozarena to fly out to center.
After throwing 103 pitches (71 for strikes including 12 of 23 on his first pitch) he was replaced by Tim Mayza to start the eighth.
In his seven innings, Ray gave up one hit, walked one and struck out 11 — the second-most strikeouts for Ray this season after he struck out 13 against the White Sox on June 8.
The Jays took a 1-0 lead in the third on a home run to left from Danny Jansen.
In the fourth, Santiago Espinal (3-for-4) singled in a run and Cavan Biggio made it 3-0 on a sacrifice fly to center that scored Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
Tampa Bay got its run when Brandon Lowe hit his third homer in the past two games with one out in the ninth.
Rich Hill (6-4) took the loss for Tampa Bay after going five innings, allowing three runs off four hits with two strikeouts.
The Rays’ bullpen was perfect again Sunday, running its consecutive scoreless streak to 22 innings.
