The Chicago Cubs, who entered Wednesday’s home game against the Philadelphia Phillies on an 11-game losing skid, placed starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (right hamstring tightness) on the 10-day injured list and recalled right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott from Triple-A Iowa.

Arrieta has been torched in back-to-back starts, going only 1 2/3 innings in each while allowing a combined 13 runs (10 earned). He can return from the IL on July 16.

Manager David Ross said Arrieta, 35, has had the hamstring issue for a couple of months.

“I think it’s just best if we take care of that, make sure that thing is not some of the cause of what’s going on with him,” Ross said. “Just trying to give him time to fully recover and make sure that’s not an issue.”

Arrieta told reporters after Tuesday’s loss to the Phillies that he believes he can still pitch well for the Cubs.

“The stuff is too good,” he said. “I still have a lot left in the tank, there’s no question about that. The stuff plays. The execution’s not there. It hasn’t been for a while. But I’ve been in similar situations in my career. I’ve been in worse situations than this.”

Abbott, 25, has allowed four runs in 8 1/3 innings in his first big-league season. The Cubs selected him in the second round of the 2017 draft.
