Eric Haase hit his sixth homer this month, Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings and the host Detroit Tigers defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-3 on Tuesday.

Boyd (3-6) allowed only an unearned run in six innings. He gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three while recording his first victory since April 13. Jose Cisnero recorded the last three outs for his second save.

Robbie Grossman had two doubles and scored a run, while Derek Hill supplied two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Miguel Cabrera drove in the other Tigers run in the opener of a three-game series.

Taylor Trammell had two hits and an RBI for Seattle and J.P. Crawford reached base four times.

Marco Gonzales (1-4) gave up four runs on five hits in four innings.

The Tigers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Grossman led off with a double and scored on Cabrera’s opposite-field single. Haase then pounded a changeup over the left-field wall for his eighth homer of the season.

Seattle got one of those runs back in the second. Shed Long Jr. led off with a double, moved up on a passed ball and scored with two outs on an error by second baseman Jonathan Schoop.

Detroit made it 4-1 in the bottom of the inning. Niko Goodrum hit a single, advanced on Akil Baddoo’s long fly out and scored on Hill’s single.

Hill scored Detroit’s fifth run in the fifth. He led off with a base hit, stole second and raced home on Schoop’s single up the middle.

Seattle scored two runs in the eighth to make it 5-3.

The Mariners loaded the bases against Joe Jimenez, as Ty France was hit by a pitch, Kyle Seager walked and Jake Fraley reached on an infield single. Daniel Norris replaced Jimenez and induced a double-play grounder from Long as France scored. Trammell hit a double to knock in Seager. Norris then struck out Jack Mayfield.
