Pedro Severino and Maikel Franco homered and the Baltimore Orioles snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 7-4 win against the visiting Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
Trey Mancini had two hits and drove in two runs for the Orioles, who had lost 16 straight games to the Twins going back to 2018, which was the longest ongoing losing streak by one MLB team vs. another.
Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann (3-3) worked 5 1/3 innings for the win, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking two. Cole Sulser, the fifth Baltimore pitcher, worked around a walk and a double in the ninth inning for his first save of the season.
After going just 5-for-64 with runners in scoring position over their past eight games, the Orioles went 4-for-7 on Tuesday.
Kyle Garlick and Willians Astudillo homered for Minnesota.
Twins starter Michael Pineda (3-3) allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.
The Orioles took an early 1-0 lead when Cedric Mullins led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Mancini’s single up the middle.
Garlick’s solo shot tied the game in the top of the third, but the Orioles struck for four runs in the bottom half.
Mullins singled with one out, stole second and scored on Mancini’s single. Consecutive singles by Anthony Santander and Freddy Galvis brought Mancini around. Santander then scored on a groundout, and Galvis came home on Ryan Mountcastle’s ground-rule double to make it 5-1.
Severino’s homer to left in the fourth pushed the lead to 6-1.
The Twins got a run back on doubles by Nelson Cruz and Alex Kirilloff in the top of the sixth, but Franco’s sixth home run of the season made it 7-2 after six.
In the seventh, the Twins loaded the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, but they settled for one run when Kirilloff’s bases-loaded single scored Garlick to pull the Twins within 7-3.
Astudillo’s solo homer made it 7-4 in the eighth.
Twins catcher Mitch Garver left the game with a bruised groin in the first inning after getting hit by a foul tip.
