San Diego Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, one day after partially dislocating his left shoulder in a game against the Colorado Rockies.

Tatis underwent an MRI exam Saturday morning. The Padres said he is dealing with “instability and inflammation” in the shoulder and will rest it before being re-evaluated in 10 days.

Tatis was injured while sliding into third base. He immediately grabbed for the arm.

“We were under the very realistic possibility that once it comes out and goes back in that there’s a very good chance that could repeat and continue to happen,” Padres manager Jayce Tingler said prior to Saturday’s game. “Certainly with the slide yesterday and just ending up in an awkward position like that, there’s a good chance of that possibly happening.”

San Diego right-hander Chris Paddack (strained left oblique) also was placed on the IL, retroactive to Wednesday. The Athletic reported Paddack was hurt during a bullpen session on Friday.

As for Tatis, this is at least the fourth time he has injured the shoulder this season. He hurt it during spring training and again in April, missing nine games the latter time. He also hurt it in June and sat out one contest.

The 22-year-old National League MVP candidate leads the league with 31 homers and 23 steals. Tatis is batting .292 with 70 RBIs in 78 games and made the NL All-Star team for the first time.

All-Star second baseman Jake Cronenworth was listed as San Diego’s starting shortstop for Saturday’s game.

Paddack’s injury comes after the Padres were unable to shore up their shaky starting pitching prior to Friday’s trade deadline.

The 25-year-old Paddack is 7-6 with a 5.13 ERA in 19 starts and one relief appearance this season.

San Diego also activated outfielder Jake Marisnick to the active roster. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

The Padres also recalled right-handers Miguel Diaz and Reiss Knehr from Triple-A El Paso and optioned right-hander Nabil Crismatt to the same affiliate.
