The Colorado Rockies on Monday claimed infielder Rio Ruiz off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and designated infielder/outfielder Bret Boswell for assignment.

Ruiz, 27, is a .214 career hitter over parts of six big-league seasons and was slashing only .167/.250/.300 over 101 plate appearances for the Orioles this year. He had three homers and six RBIs.

In 2019 and 2020, Ruiz had 21 homers and 78 RBIs in 181 games combined, but hit just .232 and .222, respectively.

Boswell, 26, was an eighth-round pick of the Rockies in 2017 who was assigned to Double-A Hartford but has not appeared in a game this season.

He last played in 2019, hitting .219 with 15 homers in 106 games with Hartford and .098 in 13 games in the Arizona Fall League.
