Jake Burger hit his first career home run and four other White Sox players went deep as Chicago overpowered the visiting Houston Astros for a 10-1 win Saturday evening.
Zack Collins, Tim Anderson, Gavin Sheets and Jose Abreu also homered for the White Sox, who beat the Astros for the first time in six meetings this season. Seven hitters in Chicago’s starting lineup recorded at least one hit.
White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (8-6) allowed one run on three hits in a complete-game performance. He walked none and struck out eight while throwing 78 of 107 pitches for strikes.
Abraham Toro homered for Houston’s lone run. Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve had the Astros’ other hits.
Astros right-hander Jake Odorizzi (3-5) gave up four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out one, and he threw only 39 of 73 pitches for strikes.
The White Sox grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third after back-to-back, solo homers by Collins and Anderson. Collins hit a 385-foot shot to left-center field for his fourth homer, and Anderson went to the opposite field for a 373-foot blast that marked his seventh homer.
In the fourth, Chicago scored two more runs to make it 4-0. Burger hit a one-out double to left field to drive in Sheets, and two batters later Burger came home to score on Anderson’s single to right-center.
Sheets increased the White Sox’s lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer in the fifth. It was the fourth homer in 14 games for the rookie who was a second-round pick out of Wake Forest in 2017.
The rout continued in the sixth as Abreu smacked a three-run homer to make it 9-0. He pulled a fastball 423 feet to left-center field for his team-leading 16th homer.
Burger increased the White Sox’s lead to 10-0 with his milestone home run — a 456-foot shot to left field. The former first-round pick out of Missouri State played in his ninth game.
Houston finally crossed the plate in the eighth. Toro hit a two-out, solo shot for his fourth homer.
