The Chicago White Sox activated catcher Yasmani Grandal from the 10-day injured list on Friday after the 32-year-old recovered from a left knee injury.

Grandal tore a tendon in the knee in a game against the Minnesota Twins on July 5 when he checked his swing. He underwent surgery two days later.

With Grandal’s return, the team will be able to put the No. 1 player at each position on the field for the first time this season.

Grandal, a two-time All-Star, was experiencing a tough season prior to the injury. The 32-year-old was batting just .188 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs in 63 games. Still, he had a .388 on-base percentage thanks to his 60 walks on the season.

Grandal is in the second season of a four-year, $73 million deal with the White Sox. The 10-year veteran has 163 homers and 481 RBIs during a career that includes stints with the San Diego Padres (2012-14), Los Angeles Dodgers (2015-18), Milwaukee Brewers (2019) and White Sox.

Chicago optioned catcher Zack Collins to Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old was batting .202 with four homers and 24 RBIs in 72 games this season.

The White Sox open a three-game season against the visiting Chicago Cubs on Friday.
