Kentucky point guard Devin Askew said Tuesday that he is transferring to Texas.

Askew entered the transfer portal earlier this month and told 247Sports that new Texas coach Chris Beard was a prime factor in his choice.

“I chose Texas because Coach Beard and his coaching staff are completely invested into their players and player development,” Askew told the website. “They have also watched film on my game and see that my playing style and abilities will thrive in their program.”

Askew averaged 6.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 25 games (20 starts) as a freshman for the Wildcats. He shot just 34.5 percent from the field, including 15 of 54 from 3-point range.

Kentucky was a disappointing 9-16 last season and Askew believes a fresh start at Texas will be beneficial for him.

“I will bring passion, skill, a team-first attitude and a dedication to work hard,” Askew said.

Texas also retained a key contributor one day earlier when senior guard Jase Febres (62 career starts) said he would return for next season. Febres had that option after the NCAA granted players a “free year” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Beard became coach of the Longhorns earlier this month after five seasons at Texas Tech.

While with the Red Raiders, Beard was successful in landing key transfers each of the past three seasons.
