Rutgers transfer Montez Mathis is taking his talents to St. John’s for the 2021-22 season, coach Mike Anderson announced Thursday.

Mathis averaged 8.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in three seasons with the Scarlet Knights. He averaged 22.3 minutes per game in 90 contests (66 starts) for Rutgers.

“He has the ability to score and defend at a high level and he is a great fit for our program,” Anderson said. “Plus, he’s a veteran and a proven winner at the collegiate and high school levels. That’s invaluable when you’re establishing a winning culture.”

Mathis started 64 straight games before being moved the reserve role halfway through the 2020-21 season and saw his numbers drop from 15.3 points and 4.1 rebounds through the first nine games to 4.9 points and 2.2 rebounds over the remaining games.

The 6-foot-4 Mathis, from Baltimore, was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2018, ranked as the No. 26 shooting guard in the nation by the 247Sports composite.

He becomes the fourth member of the Scarlet Knights to enter the transfer portal since Rutgers’ season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 63-60 loss to Houston. He joins centers Myles Johnson and Mamadou Doucoure, along with guard Jacob Young, in the portal.

Forward Ron Harper Jr. said he will enter the 2021 NBA Draft.

The Scarlet Knights finished the season with a 16-12 record.
