WNBA: A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart fuel Team USA past Japan

A’ja Wilson collected 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace the United States to an 86-69 victory over Japan on Friday at the Tokyo Olympics in a game played in Saitama, Japan.

Breanna Stewart had 15 points and 13 boards to pace the Americans to their 51st straight victory in Olympic competition dating back to the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona.

Brittney Griner added 15 points and Jewell Loyd had 12 off the bench for Team USA, which overcame a first-quarter deficit to improve to 2-0 in Group B.

The Americans will finish group play on Monday against France (1-1), which cruised to an 87-62 win over Nigeria on Friday.

The United States scored 13 of the final 17 points in the second quarter to secure a 49-40 lead at halftime.

Maki Takada scored 15 points to pace Japan (1-1).
