The New York Liberty landed a playoff berth on the final day of the WNBA regular-season without taking the court for a game.

But due to losses by the Washington Mystics and Los Angeles Sparks, the Liberty (12-20) claimed the No. 8 seed and will visit the fifth-seeded Phoenix Mercury (19-13) in Thursday’s winner-take-all first round.

All three teams had the same record, but the Liberty held the tiebreaker edge of best head-to-head record between the three teams.

Thursday’s other first-round matchup features the seventh-seeded Dallas Wings (14-18) visiting the sixth-seeded Chicago Sky (16-16).

The top-seeded Connecticut Sun (26-6) and second-seeded Las Vegas Aces (24-8) earned double-byes. The third-seeded Minnesota Lynx (22-10) and fourth-seeded Seattle Storm (21-11) will begin play in the second round on Sept. 26.

The best-of-five semifinals begin Sept. 28. That is when Connecticut and Las Vegas will play their initial games of the postseason.

The WNBA Finals are slated to start on Oct. 10. A Game, 5 if necessary, would be played on Oct. 19.

The Storm won the 2020 WNBA title by sweeping the Aces in three games.
