The Los Angeles Sparks announced the signing of wing Gabby Williams to a contract extension on Friday.

L.A. acquired Williams in a trade with the Chicago Sky on May 9, sending rookie Stephanie Watts and the rights to Leonie Fiebich to Chicago.

The Sparks said Williams will remain on the suspended list for the 2021 season in order to honor her commitments to the French national team.

“It’s great news to announce this extension with Gabby Williams today and solidify her as a core part of our group moving forward,” Sparks general manager and head coach Derek Fisher said in a news release.

The Sky drafted the 5-foot-11 Williams with the No. 4 overall pick in 2018 out of UConn. In her three seasons in the league, she has averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

“I’m so excited to be joining the LA Sparks and begin my journey with an iconic organization,” Williams said in the news release. “This is an amazing opportunity for me that I am so grateful for. Although I am unable to suit up this season, having this extension allows me to look forward to my future with the Sparks. This is going to be the start of something special.”

Los Angeles opens the 2021 WNBA season at home Friday night against the Dallas Wings.
