The Overwatch League’s Countdown Cup qualifiers continued on Saturday with much cause for celebration as the Vancouver Titans and Toronto Defiant picked up wins.
In the biggest upset of the Countdown Cup so far, the previously winless Vancouver Titans (1-12, 1 point) earned themselves some breadsticks and their first win of the season in a 3-0 sweep of the Boston Uprising (7-8, 7 points). Not only did the Titans break their winless streak and give free breadsticks to their Canadian supporters through their Pizza Hut Canada promotion, but they did so in dominant fashion.
The main catalyst for Vancouver’s win was DPS Dalton “Dalton” Bennyhoff, who excelled throughout the match, notching 41 final blows to only 18 deaths for the series as Tracer and other picks. Vancouver started with a 2-1 win on Busan, in which they completed their sponsored Breadstick Bingo.
Empowered by their successes, the Titans played with energy, which led to their best Overwatch of the year. The Titans picked up a 2-1 win on Havana, putting Boston on the back foot. While the Uprising made Game 3 on Hanamura competitive, they couldn’t stop Dalton and the Titans from taking the map 5-4 to secure the 3-0 series sweep.
In other Friday action, the Toronto Defiant (7-6, 7 points) picked up a 3-1 win against the London Spitfire (0-13, 0 points). Neither team was particularly stellar in this series, with both looking generally shaky with occasional flashes of coordination. Ultimately, the Defiant’s ability to pick up the pace left the Spitfire in the dust.
The Defiant started with a 2-1 win on Ilios, but then both teams struggled heavily on Rialto, with the Spitfire taking the map 1-0. After that, though, the series was all Toronto. The Defiant turned up the tempo and took Temple of Anubis 2-1 and then took Numbani 3-2 to secure the series win.
