Wizards District Gaming, Hornets Venom GT pull off sweeps

Top seed Wizards District Gaming and No. 3 Hornets Venom GT rolled to sweeps in the NBA 2K League’s The Turn Tournament on Friday night.

The $260,000 event, the second in-season tournament of the year, runs through Saturday. All matches are best-of-three, single elimination. The champion will receive $117,000, and the runner-up will earn $52,000.

In their first game, Wizards District Gaming jumped to a 20-5 lead after the first quarter and defeated Pistons GT 66-56, and in the rematch, they prevailed 70-61 to advance to the tournament semifinals.

John “JBM” Mascone led four players who scored in double digits for Wizards District Gaming, finishing with 20 points and nine assists, and Ryan “Dayfri” Conger added nine points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. In the rematch, JBM poured in 31 points with 12 assists, and Dayfri finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Hornets Venom GT’s sweep came at the expense of NetsGC, 82-74 and 82-72.

Craig “rigby” Burnett Jr. led Hornets Venom GT with 27 points, while Justin “Sherm” Sherman posted 18 points and 13 assists in the first game. In the second, Sherm tallied 30 points with 11 assists, while Peter “PeteBeBallin” Malin tallied 23 points and nine rebounds.

Friday’s other games were three-game sets.

No. 13 Blazer5 Gaming took two of three from No. 12 Jazz Gaming, sandwiching 75-69 and 86-71 wins around an 84-67 loss.

No. 15 Heat Check Gaming also won two of three in alternating wins and losses: beating No. 7 Kings Guard Gaming 74-65, losing a nail-biter 64-62, and then winning another close call in the finale, 74-71.
