The Cincinnati Bengals were quick to scoop up help in their defensive secondary, claiming Vernon Hargreaves III off waivers Thursday.

Hargreaves was released by the Houston Texans on Wednesday.

The Bengals also activated offensive lineman Hakeem Adeniji to the active roster from the non-football injury list. In corresponding moves, the Bengals waived defensive end Darius Hodge and cornerback Nick McCloud.

Hargreaves started five of eight games for the Texans this season and had 27 tackles and one interception. The 26-year-old played 96 percent of the defensive snaps during Sunday’s 38-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Hargreaves has 285 tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles in 65 NFL games (57 starts). He was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft by the Buccaneers.

Bengals cornerback Trae Waynes remains on injured reserve.

Adeniji has not played this season after suffering an injury while working out ahead of training camp. He started five of 15 games last year as a rookie.

The Bengals (5-3) play host to the Cleveland Browns (4-4) on Sunday.
