New York Jets assistant coach Greg Knapp is battling life-threatening injuries sustained in a bicycle accident over the weekend in California.

Knapp, 58, was biking near his home in Danville, Calif., on Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle at a busy intersection, the San Ramon Police Department confirmed to ESPN. The driver of the vehicle, whose name is being withheld, is cooperating with authorities. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor based on a preliminary report, police said.

Knapp, who is hospitalized in critical condition, was preparing to report to his first training camp with the Jets. The rookies reported Tuesday, with the full team due on July 27.

The Jets released a statement from the Knapp family on Tuesday.

“Gregg is an amazing father and husband whose passion for life can be felt in all his interactions with people. He is our rock and biggest supporter, pushing us to all strive to better ourselves each day with constant love and inspiration. While many know him for his achievements as a coach, his impact as a father and husband are far greater. We are so fortunate to have him in our lives. We are sincerely thankful to all those who have continued to reach out and provide support — it has meant the world to us. We ask that you continue to pray for Greg and our family during this time.”

Hired by the Jets as a passing game specialist in January, Knapp has worked closely with No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson and has a history of developing quarterbacks.

“Greg is such an amazing individual it is hard to imagine the challenge facing him and his family,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said in a statement. “Greg’s fun nature, kind disposition, and wealth of knowledge has allowed him to make genuine connections with all of our coaches, players and staff since he has been here. I ask that you keep him in your prayers as we all pull for him to recover from this horrific accident.”

Knapp was a member of the Denver Broncos coaching staff in 2015 when Peyton Manning guided the franchise to a Super Bowl victory.

Knapp has also worked for the Texans, 49ers, Falcons, Seahawks and Raiders in a 25-year NFL career that stretches back to 1997.
