Cornerback Bless Austin was waived by the New York Jets on Wednesday, a major surprise on the transaction wire considering the third-year pro was slated to start in 2021.

Austin, who has 16 career starts after entering the league as a sixth-round pick in 2019, sat out the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers for “personal reasons,” according to head coach Robert Saleh.

Austin said in August he came to camp focused on his next contract.

“I think I’m the real deal,” he said.

Saleh did not offer additional details this week about the DNP against the Packers. Austin remained on the roster when general manager Joe Douglas revealed his 53-man list Tuesday.

The New York Post reported Austin has been on the trading block, but no deal materialized.

Subtracting Austin leaves two rookies in line to compete for the right cornerback starting job across from Bryce Hall.

Saleh has not identified Brandin Echols or Isaiah Dunn as the starter and there is no official depth chart from the team ahead of the Sept. 12 regular-season opener.
