The Detroit Lions announced a slew of cuts Monday, including the release of wide receiver Breshad Perriman, an offseason free-agent signee.
The Lions signed Perriman to a one-year, $2.5 million deal with $2 million in guaranteed money on March 18 in hopes he’d headline a young group of receivers.
Instead, he struggled in the preseason, battling through a hip injury. He had one catch for six yards in preseason game action.
Now, the Lions have a wide receiver room that includes Tyrell Williams, Quintez Cephus, rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown, Tom Kennedy, Javon McKinley and Kalif Raymond looking to solidify their spots before NFL teams make final roster cuts. The deadline to get down to the 53-player roster limit is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
Lions coach Dan Campbell foreshadowed Perriman’s release last week, saying “there just hasn’t been enough out there” from him.
Perriman, 28 next month, has been well-traveled since the Baltimore Ravens selected him with the No. 26 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. In 63 games (22 starts) with the Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets, Perriman has 125 receptions for 2,066 yards and 14 touchdowns.
He appeared in 12 games last season with the Jets, catching 30 passes for 505 yards and three touchdowns.
The Lions also released safety Alijah Holder, cornerback Mike Ford, wide receivers Victor Bolden and Damion Ratley, defensive lineman Miles Brown, and offensive linemen Evan Heim, Dan Skipper and Tyrell Crosby.
The Lions also announced that third-string quarterback Tim Boyle broke his right throwing thumb and will miss an indefinite amount of time after undergoing surgery Monday.
–The Arizona Cardinals released 10 players, including wide receiver KeeSean Johnson. The former sixth-round pick caught 36 passes for 360 yards and a touchdown in 18 games over his first two seasons.
The Cardinals also announced the following cuts: offensive lineman Shaq Calhoun, running back Tavien Feaster, center Michal Menet, defensive lineman Cam Murray, cornerback Picasso Nelson, receiver A.J. Richardson, linebacker Evan Weaver, punter Ryan Winslow and linebacker Bryson Young.
–The Indianapolis Colts reportedly cut safety Sean Davis, who signed a one-year deal with the team in the offseason.
The Colts also cut guard Jake Eldrenkamp and linebacker Isaiah Kaufusi. The team put offensive tackle Sam Tevi on injured reserve.
–The Buffalo Bills announced they cut RB Kerrith Whyte, WR Brandon Powell and CB Tim Harris.
