The Carolina Panthers waived veteran quarterback Matt Barkley on Tuesday.

The move comes one day after Carolina removed Barkley from the COVID-19 list.

But the Panthers no longer had a need for Barkley with QB Sam Darnold back from a shoulder injury and Cam Newton and P.J. Walker also on the roster.

Carolina signed Barkley off the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad last month, but he didn’t see any game action.

Barkley, 31, has appeared in 19 games for the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-14), Chicago Bears (2016) and Buffalo Bills (2018-20), mostly in a backup capacity. He made six of his seven career starts for the Bears in 2016.

Barkley owns a 58.4 career completion percentage and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 1-to-2 (11 touchdowns, 22 picks).

The Panthers (5-10) have lost five straight games entering Sunday’s game at the New Orleans Saints.
