Bell in 1957, the South Course underwent renovations overseen by Rees Jones in 2001 and 2019. … The last time Torrey Pines played host to the U.S. Open in 2008, Tiger Woods famously overcame a broken leg and torn ACL to beat Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole Monday playoff. … Phil Mickelson is a San Diego native and three-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Mickelson, who turns 51 on Wednesday, became the oldest major winner in history at last month’s PGA Championship. A six-time U.S. Open runner-up, Mickelson is attempting to become the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam. … Cole Hammer is one of seven amateurs in the field. He also played in the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay when he was 15 years old. … Two sets of brothers made the field: Alvaro and Carlos Ortiz and Edoardo and Francesco Molinari.
BEST BETS: Jon Rahm (+1050 at DraftKings) has been medically cleared after withdrawing from the Memorial with a six-shot lead due to a positive COVID-19 test. His most recent victory came at the BMW Championship in August and he seeks his first career major title. He finished second at the 2020 Farmers and T7 this year. … DeChambeau (+1500) is attempting to successfully defend his U.S. Open title. The last person to do so was rival Brooks Koepka (+1900) in 2017-18. Koepka finished T2 at the PGA Championship before missing the cut last week. … Dustin Johnson (+1500) is coming off his first top-10 since February, although he faded from contention on the back nine last Sunday. … Xander Schauffele (+1500) is another San Diego resident with intimate knowledge of Torrey Pines, where he finished T2 earlier this year. He hasn’t won since 2019 but has six top-fives in 16 career majors. … Rory McIlroy (+2100) snapped his winless drought at the Wells Fargo and has a T16 and a T3 at the Farmers the past two years. … Patrick Cantlay (+2200) won his last start at the Memorial after Rahm’s WD and is seeking his first career major title. … Patrick Reed (+2500) won the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year and is attempting to join Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to win a PGA Tour event and the U.S. Open on the same course in the same year. He also finished T6 in the 2020 Farmers.
