Minnesota United, FC Dallas play to draw

Phelipe made seven saves to record his first clean sheet in nine starts this season and lead FC Dallas to a 0-0 draw with Minnesota United on Saturday night in Frisco, Tex.

Tyler Miller had four saves for his 10th shutout of the season as the Loons (10-9-8, 38 points) moved into a tie with the LA Galaxy (11-11-5, 38) for sixth place in the Western Conference.

FC Dallas (6-13-10, 28 points) snapped a three-game losing streak with the draw while improving to just 2-6-4 over its last 12 matches.

The Toros finished a scoreless first half with an 8-5 edge in shots, including a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal, but Miller was up to the challenge starting with a curling long-range right-footed strike by Brandon Servanio from outside the penalty box in the second minute that Miller knocked away from the top left corner of the goal.

The Loons’ best first-half chance came in the 14th minute when Emanuel Reynoso tried a spinning left-footed shot in the middle of the box off a Robin Lod feed that Phelipe easily cradled.

A minute later FC Dallas defender Ryan Hollingshead fired a sharp-angle left-footed shot from the left side of the box that scooted across the face of the goal but went wide of the far post.

Hollingshead appeared to give the Toros a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute when Michael Boxall’s clearing pass hit him on the edge of the six-yard box where he booted in a quick shot past Miller. But the goal was later disallowed after a VAR review determined that the ball had hit Hollingshead in the arm.

Phelipe then came up with three big saves in the span of three minutes including a double-save on Lod’s spinning shot from the middle of the box followed by a diving stop on Franco Fragapane’s rebound try by the left post. Two minutes later he dove across the goal to deflect Reynoso’s curling shot from outside the penalty box that was headed for the left corner.

Minnesota lost Reynoso to a red card in the 89th minute after a VAR review showed that he had stepped across the ankle of Szabolcs Schon while trying to a win a ball to the right of the box. But FC Dallas failed to capitalize with the extra man and didn’t manage a shot until the seventh and final minute of stoppage time when Jesus Ferreira’s try from outside the penalty box curled about two feet wide of the right corner of the goal.
