The New York Red Bulls bolstered their defense by signing France’s Issiar Drame to a deal through the end of this year with an option for next year.

The move was first reported nearly four weeks ago but finally was confirmed by the club Wednesday.

“We are pleased to add Drame to our roster,” Red Bulls sporting director Kevin Thelwell said in a statement. “We hope he can add the necessary depth to our back line.”

New York head coach Gerhard Struber added in a statement, “Drame is a talent and we are happy to add him. It is always helpful to add more depth to our defense.”

New York’s defense already was solid, with its 30 goals conceded ranking third in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference.

Drame, 22, joins the Red Bulls after playing parts of two seasons for Olimpik Donesk in Ukraine. He previously played for the youth and reserve sides of Olympique Lyon in France.

Drame did not play Wednesday night as the Red Bulls (8-11-7, 31 points) battled the Philadelphia Union to a 1-1 draw in Harrison, N.J. Eleventh-place New York sits eight points out of the seventh and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference.
