New England Revolution standout Carles Gil signed a contract extension through the 2024 season on Monday.

Financial details weren’t revealed.

According to the MLS Players Association database, Gil has a base salary of $2.25 million for the 2021 season.

Gil, 28, is in his third season with New England. The midfielder was MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2019 when he had 10 goals and 14 assists.

“Since I arrived in Boston more than two years ago, this city has become my home and the fans and my teammates have become my family,” Gil said in a statement. “Playing for the New England Revolution has been one of the highlights of my career and it is my ultimate goal to bring an MLS Cup championship home to our supporters.”

Gil has one goal in seven matches this season and shares the MLS lead with four assists. His elite playmaking skills often create chances for his teammates.

“It’s critical that we have Carles around for many years,” head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena said during a video teleconference. “It’s a difficult position to fill, the skills required to play the position is very demanding.

“Not many teams in the league have players of Carles’ caliber. We’re real pleased he’s going to be with the New England Revolution.”

Gil was limited to six matches in 2020 as his season was interrupted by a left Achilles injury that required surgery.

Prior to joining the Revolution, Gil played professionally in England and his native Spain.
