The Seattle Sounders will look to get back on the winning track when they square off against Austin FC on Thursday in the team’s first-ever trip to the capital city of Texas.

The MLS-leading Sounders (8-1-5, 29 points) head to Austin after a 1-0 loss at Minnesota on Sunday that snapped Seattle’s league-record 13-match unbeaten run to start the season. The Sounders have not lost two consecutive games since May 26-June 1, 2019, a span of more than two years.

Austin forged a scoreless draw against the Sounders on May 30 in Seattle. The club is looking to become just the second expansion team to go unbeaten in multiple matches against the Sounders in its first MLS season.

Although Austin is just 1-1-2 at home, Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer understands the challenge ATX will bring to the pitch.

“(Q2 Stadium) is a hard place to play and is our first time there,” Schmetzer said after the loss at Minnesota. “But our group is pretty determined to push past this game. They were pretty fired up in the locker room afterward.”

Austin FC (3-6-4, 13 points) has just one win in their last 10 matches (five losses, four draws) after winning two of their first three games in their inaugural season. Austin heads back to play after a 2-0 loss at home to Los Angeles FC on July 7, its most recent outing.

Austin has had 15 days to rest in-between matches. Thursday’s match begins a busy stretch for the expansion side as it plays five matches over a 16-day span.

“We’ve worked a good bit on certain aspects of our game and I think there’s been really good progress and good understanding from the players,” Austin coach Josh Wolff said. “The last couple of weeks has been good for us.”

Austin FC has been shut out in seven of their past nine matches and failed to find the net in three of their first four home contests.
