Sporting Kansas City captain Johnny Russell parlayed four productive seasons with the club into a two-year contract extension, with an option for a third year, the club announced Thursday.

No financial details of the extension were revealed.

Russell, a native of Scotland, has 35 goals and 37 assists in 120 games (100 starts) for Sporting KC since first joining the club as a striker in 2018 from Derby County FC in England. The 31-year-old was named captain before the start of this season.

Russell has eight goals and 6 assists in 24 games (20 starts) this season as SKC (14-6-7, 49 points) sits in second place in the Western Conference, two points behind the Seattle Sounders. The club finished first in the conference in both 2018 and 2020.

Russell’s contract extension comes as he has scored a goal in four consecutive regular-season appearances.
