The Vancouver Whitecaps are among the early surprises in Major League Soccer, sitting at four points through two matches (1-0-1) after earning results against the Portland Timbers and, most recently, Toronto FC.

Vancouver returns “home” this Sunday to play the Colorado Rapids. The match will be played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, where the Whitecaps are based because of COVID travel restrictions between the United States and Canada.

They played Toronto FC in Florida last weekend, earning a 2-2 tie. Cristian Dajome and Andy Rose scored for the Vancouver, and the Whitecaps have returned to Utah with confidence.

They welcomed back previously injured players Tosaint Ricketts and Erik Godoy to the team for practice this week, while they await international visa clearance for one of their top players, defender Ali Adnan.

“Colorado is an experienced team. They were already dangerous on set plays last season, so they’re continuing in those moments,” Vancouver head coach Marc Dos Santos said. “We’re preparing for this game with very high levels of responsibility and awareness of the type of opponent.”

The Rapids (0-1-1, 1 point) were a playoff team last season, and have lost only once to the Whitecaps away from Colorado since 2016. But they became a part of MLS and Austin FC history last weekend when they lost 3-1 to the newest MLS club, for Austin’s first win in franchise history.

It led to some early-season soul searching for the Rapids. who have managed just one goal in their first two matches of the season.

“What we did well is we came back in the locker room after the game and took a long, hard look at ourselves,” defender Drew Moor said, “and told each other that it wasn’t good enough. It’s a positive group of guys with a lot of character. And we’ll put last weekend behind us and do everything we can to put what went wrong right and to look forward to Sunday night and going on the road and getting three points.”
