ATP roundup: Filip Krajinovic leads Serbian trio in Hamburg

No. 6 seed Filip Krajinovic outlasted German wild card Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1, one of three Serbians to enjoy victory Tuesday at the Hamburg European Open in Germany.

Altmaier battled by saving nine of 14 break points and crushing five aces, but Karjinovic broke his serve early in the third set in order to win four of the first five games and wrest away control in a match that took roughly 2 1/2 hours.

Joining the Serbian victory trend, No. 5 Dusan Lajovic handled Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-4, and Laslo Djere upset No. 7 Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-4, 7-5.

Hall of Fame Open

American No. 5 seed Tennys Sandgren defeated Portgual’s Joao Sousa 6-4, 7-6 (3) in his first-round match Monday in Newport, R.I.

Sandgren smashed 10 aces and came back from down 2-0 in the second-set tiebreak to ensure victory.

Fellow American Jack Sock, a wild card, was also a winner Monday as he dispatched of Australian qualifier Alex Bolt 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Chinese Taipei’s Jason Jung also won in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4) over Canadian Brayden Schnur and will face Sandgren in the next round.

Nordea Open

Swiss qualifier Henri Laaksonen knocked out No. 6 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the first round in Bastad, Sweden.

Laaksonen won 77 percent of his first-serve points (34 of 44) and saved seven of 11 break points to overcome Musetti.

Czech No. 7 seed Jiri Vesely and Finnish No. 8 seed Emil Ruusuvuori held serve Tuesday. Vesely eliminated Italian Salvatore Caruso 6-3, 6-2, while Ruusuvuori defeated Swedish wild card Mikael Ymer 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
