ATP roundup: Novak Djokovic hits milestone in Belgrade

No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic reached a milestone in his native Serbia with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win against Germany’s Mats Moraing in second-round action Tuesday at the Belgrade Open.

Playing in his first match since his 34th birthday, Djokovic collected his 951st career win to match Guillermo Vilas of Argentina for fifth place in the Open Era (since 1968).

The World No. 1 struck six aces and converted four of his 10 break chances against Moraing. Djokovic’s quarterfinal opponent will be Argentina’s Federico Coria, a 6-3, 6-2 winner against Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas.

In other action, Slovakia’s Alex Molcan blanked Serbia’s Pedja Krstin 6-0, 6-0, and Spain’s Fernando Verdasco upset No. 4 seed Adrian Mannarino of France 7-6 (4), 6-0.

Emilia-Romagna Open

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over countryman Gianluca Mager in first-round play in Parma, Italy, setting up a second-round clash with No. 8 seed Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan. Nishioka also came from behind to beat American Sam Querrey, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet of France was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, and No. 7 seed Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia held off Italy’s Salvatore Caruso 6-4, 7-6 (8).

Also advancing were Italy’s Marco Cecchinato, American Sebastian Korda, Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos, Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic and Spain’s Pedro Martinez and Jaume Maunar.
