Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini of Italy pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday due to a thigh injury.

The world’s No. 8-ranked player announced his decision on Instagram.

“I am extremely disappointed to announce my withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympic games,” he wrote. “I had an MRI scan yesterday on the thigh injury I sustained during Wimbledon and was informed I will not be able to compete for a couple of weeks.”

Berrettini, 25, played with a bandage on his left thigh in the grass-court Grand Slam loss to No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia earlier this month.

The Italian National Olympic Committee said it is unable to replace Berrettini as the deadline to name new athletes for the Summer Games passed on Friday.

“Representing Italy is the biggest honour for me so it is devastating to miss the Olympics,” Berrettini added.

The Olympics’ opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday.

Other high-profile tennis stars who are not participating in Tokyo include Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, Johanna Konta, Bianca Andreescu and Angelique Kerber.
