Rafael Nadal announced on social media Monday that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion wrote on Twitter that he learned the result of his test after making his comeback in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition event in Abu Dhabi last week.

“I wanted to announce that on my return home after playing the Abu Dhabi tournament, I have tested positive for COVID in the PCR test that has been performed on me when I arrived in Spain,” Nadal wrote in Spanish.

Nadal, 35, was making his first tournament appearance since August after dealing with a left-foot injury. That injury forced him to withdraw from the U.S. Open a mere week-and-a-half before the start of the event.

“I am having some unpleasant moments but I hope that I will improve little by little,” Nadal wrote. “I am now homebound and have reported the result to those who have been in contact with me.

“As a result of the situation I have to have total flexibility with my calendar and I will analyze my options depending on my evolution. I will keep you informed of any decisions about my future tournaments.”

The world’s sixth-ranked player is uncertain to participate in the Australian Open, which will be Jan. 17-30 in Melbourne.
