Three weeks ago, Jenson Brooksby had never played in an ATP Tour quarterfinal.

Now the 20-year-old Sacramento native is through to his second ATP Tour semifinal in two events.

Brooksby routed 11th-seeded Australian John Millman 6-1, 6-2 on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Citi Open in Washington.

Last month in Newport, R.I., Brooksby advanced to the final, building on his three ATP Challenger Tour championships in 2021.

Brooksby even landed praise on Twitter from three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, who wrote, “Jenson Brooksby is the sort of player I love to watch … lots of variety … high tennis IQ … great in defence.”

Brooksby’s semifinal opponent Saturday will be fifth-seeded Italian Jannik Sinner, who got past American Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-2 on Friday.

The other semifinal will feature Japan’s Kei Nishikori and the United States’ Mackenzie McDonald. Nishikori topped 14th-seeded Lloyd Harris of South Africa 6-3, 7-5, and McDonald won an all-U.S. matchup against Denis Kudla, 6-3, 6-2.
